Shou Sugi Ban (焼杉板) is a Japanese wood product that literally means “burned cypress”. This special product originated in Japan in the 18th century as a durable facade covering to protect the typical wooden houses in Japan against wildfires and weather influences.
According to this special age-old tradition, Cedar or Cypress wood is burned on one side with a special woodworking technique called “Yakisugi” in Japanese.
Shou Sugi Ban is also called black burned wood. The black wood gives clean, clear lines and reveals an inherent textural beauty. The fire provides a special texture and color of the wood with a specific modern look.
The planks are placed against each other in threes, so that they form a chimney. A fire is fueled inside the chimney, giving the wood its carbon layer. The resulting carbon layer provides a natural fire retardancy and protects against insects and fungi.
